The following item has been taken from the web site of the London EVENING STANDARD on Tuesday 16 december 2008: More Heathrow turbulence for Lord Mandelson LORD Mandelson has thrown his resurrected weight behind BAA's bid for a hugely unpopular and polluting third runway at Heathrow Airport. A good time, then, for the stalwart anti-runway campaigners known as the Heathrow Association for the Control of Aircraft Noise (HACAN) to reveal that BAA's former chief executive Sir John Egan (pictured, on the left) lied when he promised that BAA did not want a third runway at the airport when seeking Government backing for Terminal 5 in the 1990s. When the T5 inquiry was about to begin 13 years ago, Sir John wrote a letter to residents in a wide area around Heathrow saying: "T5 does not call for a third runway". In 1999 he wrote another letter, saying "subject to permission being given for T5, an additional Heathrow runway should be ruled out forever", adding: "Our position could not be clearer, T5 will not lead to a third runway". Last week BAA's Director of Strategy, Mike Forster, admitted to the Heathrow Consultative Committee that these were porkies. "Well, that's what he had to say to get permission for Terminal Five," Forster explained rather lamely. HACAN chair John Stewart can be forgiven for concluding, as he did, that "the existence of Father Christmas is less of a fairy tale than the promises of BAA." But he has chosen an unfortunate metaphor: last week a supply teacher was summarily sacked from a primary school in Greater Manchester for telling the children that there was no Santa. Let's hope the feisty Stewart does not suffer a similar fate.

The agreement links Europe’s largest construction project with the continent’s biggest coastal habitat creation scheme. The project, to help replace wildlife sites damaged by climate change, was announced a year ago but depended on raising at least £12 million. Plans have altered since and costs have risen. .....Graham Wynne, Chief Executive of the RSPB, said: “This is an fantastic agreement that one year ago, we could never have imagined. The RSPB will next week submit a planning application to Essex County Council to transform Wallasea Island with Crossrail material. Public consultation will start in December and Essex County Council is expected to reach a decision in the spring.
